Great Gatsby Room

This week in Interior Design our task was to create a room inspired by the the movie the Great Gatsby for a client using the website http://www.polyvore.com/. For my first board I chose the colors black and white and used red and gold for a bold pop of color. According to the website https://us.farrow-ball.com/the-great-gatsby/content/fcp-content the sophisticated glamour effect is created through light colors balanced with bursts of bold colors. I also incorporated the gold arches on the wall the create the effect of a high ceiling constructing a high glam feel. The addition of the arches and the curves in the furniture add a sense of elegance to the room.(http://www.hollestewartdesign.com/add-sparkle-and-glamour-to-your-home-interiors).             

For my second board I went for a homier aspect displayed though out the room. I added a busy textured pattern for an accent wall and balanced it with a bold mirror centerpiece. I used the curtains, candles, and vase to accent the mirror. This design relates to the Great Gatsby because of the neutral colors (black and white) blended with strong colors of gold (https://us.farrow-ball.com/the-great-gatsby/content/fcp-content). Also because of the addition of standout pieces balancing with the textures (http://www.hollestewartdesign.com/add-sparkle-and-glamour-to-your-home-interiors/). 

Space

This week in Interior Design we learned about the value of space in designing. Space in Interior Design is defined as the three dimensional area in which the designer works.  Our assignment was to create a studio apartment using a website called Gabberts. Stdio apartments do not have enclosed walls other than the bathroom. For mine I liked the idea of having a more spacious living room and kitchen with a small bedroom. 

Texture

This week in Interior Design we talked about the element of design, texture. The different types of texture include visual, tactile, and audible. In my room that I created using the website Olioboard, I included my tactile texture, where one can feel the texture of the surface,  items to be the fur pillow, cactus and the umbrella lamp. I used those because you can feel the softness of the fur or the on the pillows, the prickles of the cactus, and the bumps on the umbrella. The audible items are the mirror, the leather chair, and the wood bowl. These are examples of audible textures because of the way they sound when, knocked on, rubbed, etc. Finally, my visual items are the rug, peace sign statue, and the striped pillow because each item looks as though it would feel a certain way just by the way it looks. For example, the glossy statue appear to be smooth to the touch. Overall the addition to texture in a room can add more depth to a given

Summit Ave

Summit ave is a street in St.Paul Minnesota containing the grand and historic houses from the 19th century. In our Interior Design class, we went on a field trip to walk along the street to view these historic houses.On our walk we learned about different houses including the James J. Hill house. We were granted the opportunity to go inside the house pictured below, making it one of my favorites that we saw. My favorite part of the house was the intricately detailed staircase.

I'm drawn to darker and mysterious looking houses making this house also one of my favorites.

Summit Ave, St. Paul

The Weyerhaeuser house was designed by Channing Whitney  and was built as a Tudor Revival in 1908. This home was built for a German immigrant, Fredrick Weterhaesuser, who came to American in 1852 with no money. He gained his money by beginning a career in lumber, later becoming known as the "Timber King".

Lines

This week in Interior Design we learned about the different types of lines and how they affect different designs. They can play a part in making a room seems bigger, draw the attention to a specific focal point, and even help display different moods.

  Vertical-

These prominent lines in the book case as well as the sides of the entry way make the room feel taller by lifting the eye up. The tallness of the room eludes a state of formality to the room. The boldness of the vertical lines used in this design aid in shaping a room filled with strength and power.

Horizontal-

Horizontal lines lengthen the room by following the horizon. The horizontal lines of the book shelf and in the decorative pattern in the rug help promote an elongated effect to the room. The lengthening of the room slowly draws the eyes down the hallway to the door on the other side.The effect generates a tranquil and resting vibe the the room rather then the formal state with the vertical lines.

Diagonal Lines-

The diagonal lines in this room are displayed as a decorative line on the wall in a natural colored chevron pattern. These diagonal lines liven up the room by filling up dead space with an energetic pattern overall establishing a more dynamic impression. If the diagonal lines were not present, the room itself would not establish the same spirited perception.

Curved lines-

Curved lines add feminism and elegance to a room. Delicate curves moves the eyes swiftly around each curve forming a softer touch to the room. The curves assemble a more feminine awareness rather than conveying a bold allusion. On this winding staircase, the eye follows the edges up and around each curve in its elegant pattern. 


Overall, designing rooms keeping the use of lines in mind can help generate different psychological moods and feelings and help transform the aspects a room may employ.

Cass Gilbert and Clarence Johnston

Cass Gilbert and Clarence Johnston

Cass Gilbert a popular architect in the late 1800’s created his first design in 1883 being his mother’s house. Two years later he formed partnership with another architect creating build residences, churches, office buildings, railroad stations and commercial buildings in Minnesota, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, and Montana. He later went on to do individual work which included building the State Capitol in St. Paul. Designing the capitol brought attention upon his career leading him to build and design building in many different states including New York. It was in New York where he created a building that stood as the tallest building for over a decade.  

 
Clarence Johnston was most famous for his design in houses and mansions  but he also contributed in designing a variety of academic buildings, churches, schools, sports palaces, prisons, hospitals, and asylums. He contributed a lot to the buildings along Summit Ave. His First commission was for the future governor at the age of twenty four. This mansion overlooked Lake Superior and is now a popular tourist attraction in Duluth.
