James J. Hill House
The James J. Hill House is the largest house on Summit Avenue. When completed in 1891 by Peabody, Stearns, and Furber it was the most expensive house in Minnesota. It consists of 36,500 square feet including 13 bathrooms, 22 fireplaces, and 16 glass chandeliers. The house also provided the Hill family with heating, gas, electric, and plumbing. The over all cost of the house at the time was $931,275.01. James J. Hill obtained his wealth from working on the railroads.James J. Hill’s vision as the owner was to create a house suited for his family as well as symbolizing success.
